Celebrating Student Talent Through the Philadelphia Independence Awards

September 22, 2026

For many Philadelphia-area students, performing on the Miller Theater stage is a dream come true. Through the Philadelphia Independence Awards, students like Molly Millard and Kingston Williams-Ekpaji have had the opportunity to celebrate their passion for musical theater while showcasing their talents on a professional stage.

“Since I’ve gone to see shows there since I was little, it was so amazing to perform on [the Miller Theater] stage,” says Millard.

“Seeing [the awards ceremony] last year and seeing the kids who really have a passion for it and seeing them perform to their fullest extent made me realize this is why I love musical theater,” says Williams-Ekpaji.

Behind the Scenes with The Philadelphia Independence Awards

In this FYI Philly segment, NBC10 Philadelphia interviews Philadelphia Independence Awards President Brian Weiner and participating students about what the program entails and how students benefit from it:️

Recognizing Student Talent Across Greater Philadelphia

Each year, the Philadelphia Independence Awards honors students from participating schools during an awards ceremony at the Miller Theater, presenting more than 20 awards across performing and non-performing categories and featuring performances from select productions.

This all-volunteer program—led by theater educators and community supporters—uplifts local student talent, champions diversity in the arts, and provides essential support to under-resourced school theater programs.
