Behind the Curtain: A Conversation with Lindsay Berckman
May 12, 2025Lindsay Berckman On Creating Exceptional Audience Experiences
When you come to see a performance with us at the Kimmel Center, the Miller Theater, or the Academy of Music, we prepare everything to ensure you have a remarkable experience from the moment you walk through our doors. This commitment to guest satisfaction doesn't happen by accident — it's the result of work by Lindsay Berckman, Director of Audience Experience, and her team's dedication to excellence. Lindsay shared her insights on what it takes to create those magical moments that extend beyond what happens on our stages. We also discussed the scholarship that Lindsay recently won with the International Association of Venue Management (IAVM) to attend their Venue Management School, which is a cohort-based, educational experience spanning into two years (broken up into one week each year) culminating in a certificate of completion.
Please introduce yourself and describe your role within the organization.
Hi, I'm Lindsay Berckman, and I lead the Audience Experience team for The Philadelphia Orchestra and Ensemble Arts Philly. My role involves managing a team of 250 Front of House staff, ensuring a high-quality experience for our audiences, and collaborating across departments to make every performance a seamless and memorable event. From overseeing daily operations to training our staff and refining customer service strategies, my goal is to ensure that every guest walks away with a positive experience.
What's your favorite part of your job?
The people! Whether it's our incredible staff who go above and beyond or the guests who share their excitement and love for live performances, I thrive on the energy of this industry. There's nothing like seeing the magic of theater come to life for someone, whether it's their first show or their hundredth.
How did you get involved with this industry?
My path to venue management wasn't exactly traditional. I have a BFA in Painting and Art History, and I originally started my career in the museum world. While I loved being surrounded by art and culture, I quickly found that what I enjoyed most was the customer service side, helping guests navigate the space, answering questions, and creating welcoming experiences. That passion led me to Front of House operations, where I realized how much I loved the fast-paced environment of live events. Over time, I worked my way through different roles, learning the ins and outs of venue management, and I've never looked back.
What is most important when creating a positive, memorable audience experience?
A great audience experience isn't just about the performance...it starts the moment a guest walks through the door. From clear communication before arrival to friendly interactions with staff and an atmosphere that feels welcoming and organized, every detail matters. To me, the key elements are hospitality, problem-solving, and consistency. If we can make someone's visit stress-free and enjoyable, they're more likely to return, and that's what builds lasting relationships with our audiences.
What is Venue Management School?
IAVM's Venue Management School is one of the best educational programs for professionals in venue and event management. It's an intensive two-year training experience where industry leaders share insights on best practices, leadership strategies, and emerging trends in the field. It's a unique opportunity to learn from the best while networking with peers who share the same passion for creating world-class guest experiences.
Tell us about the scholarship as well as the application process.
The scholarship itself is an incredible opportunity that makes attending this prestigious program more accessible. The application process for the scholarship involved submitting details about my background, experience, and commitment to venue management, along with essays on why attending Venue Management School would enhance my career.
What was your reaction when you learned that you won this scholarship?
I literally screamed at my desk! It was a mix of shock, excitement, and pure joy. I had to immediately tell my boss because I couldn't contain myself. It's such an honor to be recognized, and I'm beyond grateful for the opportunity. The first thing that came to mind was how I could take what I learn and bring it back to my team to continue elevating our audience experience.
What are you most looking forward to when you attend Venue Management School this summer?
I'm excited to immerse myself in the curriculum, particularly the Accessibility and Crowd Management courses, gain fresh perspectives from industry leaders, and connect with professionals from venues across the country. Learning about innovative strategies and best practices will help me refine our operations and elevate our team's approach to guest services. Most of all, I look forward to bringing back new ideas and inspiration to make our venue an even better place for both our guests and staff.
