Orchestrating Joy in Music Education: Celebrating our Staff with Maya Jacobs

July 8, 2025

Maya Jacobs and Her Passion For Music Education

Beyond the captivating performances at the Kimmel Center, Academy of Music, and Miller Theater, we are deeply committed to educating and inspiring Philadelphia’s communities. One of the driving forces behind this mission is Maya Jacobs, our Director of Instrumental Music Education. From the joy she sees in students experiencing live performances and kids participating in interactive music classes, to the collaborative spirit of her team, and her dedication to making classical music more accessible, Maya shares what fuels her passion.

Please introduce yourself and describe your role within the organization.

My name is Maya Jacobs and I’m the Director of Instrumental Music Education here.

What is your favorite part about your job?

My favorite part about my job is the students’ reactions when they enter and leave the hall for one of our shows. They are so thrilled and excited, and it completely fills my heart with gratitude. I have also always been drawn to making classical music more accessible. I find it inspiring to combine this with my passion for organizing events.

What is your favorite part about the organization?

The people! I’m so lucky to have such a great team that is supportive and creative. A big part of our job involves communicating with educators and students. I adore the patience and support we have for each other.

What was your first interaction with our organization?

I first visited Philadelphia in 2013, while I was living in Boston. I remember passing the Kimmel Center and being so impressed by this beautiful building. The first show I saw there was a Philadelphia Orchestra concert sometime in 2019. It instantly became my favorite American orchestra

Do you have any artistic hobbies?

I have three degrees in Viola Performance! I started playing the violin when I was 7 and switched to viola in high school. After practicing and performing for so many years, I truly enjoy being backstage and organizing educational events. I love the arts, and I try to attend museums and concerts whenever I can; especially with my family. I have one daughter who is now 3.5 years old and she is just old enough to attend full-length concerts. I also enjoy baking healthy-ish treats and running by the Schuylkill River.

What does the future look like for Maya

I hope to keep growing and learning. I wish to expand my knowledge and keep asking questions. I plan to keep doing the best work I can with local educators and the Philadelphia community so we can all be better humans in this world.

Thank you, Maya, for taking the time to speak with us. We are so excited to see how you continue to impact future generations and the arts!
