FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, March 16, 2026)
Ensemble Arts Philly, the region’s year-round home for world-class performance across the Academy of Music, Kimmel Center, Miller Theater, and The Shubert Organization’s Forrest Theatre, in partnership with The Shubert Organization, unveils an epic 2026–2027 Broadway season that brings Broadway’s most celebrated new musicals, contemporary classics, and beloved world-class productions directly to Center City. Built around Broadway productions with Broadway-caliber performances and pedigrees, the landmark lineup offers Philadelphia audiences the chance to experience the same titles lighting up New York—without leaving Philadelphia.

The 2026–2027 season features 14 shows and 157 performances across three historic venues, led by the 2025 Tony® Award-winning Best Musical Maybe Happy Ending, alongside Tony Award winners The Great Gatsby, Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical, Oh, Mary!, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Collectively, the lineup represents a distinguished total of 39 Tony Awards, 39 Drama Desk Awards, 24 Olivier Awards, and 5 Grammy Awards, underscoring an exceptional range of storytelling that spans celebrated masterpieces and bold new works shaping the future of theater.

Across the season, audiences are invited to step fully into richly imagined worlds, some newly discovered and others powerfully revisited through live theater. The Jazz Age shimmer of The Great Gatsby gives way to the Technicolor pop world of BOOP!® The Musical, where nostalgia is reimagined with a contemporary theatrical flair. That sense of transport deepens in the shadowed romance and operatic grandeur of The Phantom of the Opera before expanding into the spellbinding, ever-evolving universe of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Together, these productions surround audiences with environments that feel captivating, detailed, and alive in the moment—inviting them not just to watch a story unfold, but to inhabit it.

Music-driven storytelling plays a defining role throughout the season, particularly in productions that explore identity, growth, and self-discovery. In Hell’s Kitchen, Alicia Keys’ music anchors a coming-of-age story shaped by place, community, and ambition. That emotional focus resonates in Waitress, returning for its 10th anniversary, where Sara Bareilles’ heartfelt score captures longing, resilience, and the courage to imagine a different life. In Maybe Happy Ending, an intimate, deeply human story unfolds through a richly expressive musical language, while the revival of The Who’s Tommy channels its iconic rock score into a powerful exploration of resilience and transformation. Across these productions, music is not simply a soundtrack, but the engine that drives emotional connection and personal change.

Balancing that emotional depth is a collection of smart, bold comedies bringing delight, spice, and surprising points of view to the season. Operation Mincemeat applies creative comedy to real life history, as sidesplitting and uplifting as it is poignant. The laughs continue with The Book of Mormon, the audacious musical comedy delivering outrageous scenarios from the minds of South Park’s creators. Oh, Mary! is a rapid-fire, laugh-out-loud 80-minute comedy packed with outrageous camp, sharp wit, and wall-to-wall hilarity from start to finish. Together, these productions remind audiences that Broadway’s funniest shows are often its smartest.

This year’s six-show subscription package includes The Great Gatsby, BOOP!® The Musical, Hell’s Kitchen, Maybe Happy Ending, The Phantom of the Opera, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

“For nearly 170 years, our stages have been where Philadelphians experience worldclass performance in all its forms—from orchestral music and jazz to dance, comedy, and Broadway,” said Ryan Fleur, President and CEO of Ensemble Arts Philly. “This 2026–2027 Broadway season continues that legacy with more than 150 performances across three historic venues, featuring productions created for Broadway, now brought directly to Center City.”

“We are delighted to bring an exciting mix of Broadway productions to the Forrest Theatre this season, including the Philadelphia premiere of Operation Mincemeat, the return of The Book of Mormon, and the highly anticipated revival of The Who's Tommy,” said Robert E. Wankel, Chairman and CEO of The Shubert Organization. “It is especially meaningful to welcome the revival of The Who's Tommy back to our historic theater, where it premiered in 1994 during its original North American tour. Together, these productions reflect the Forrest Theatre’s long tradition of presenting exceptional Broadway experiences for Philadelphia audiences.”

“We’ve curated this season of productions and are excited by how distinct the voice and perspective of each title feels within this lineup,” said Frances Egler, Vice President of Theatrical Programming and Presentations, Ensemble Arts Philly’s resident Tony Award voter and curator of the Broadway series. “Where the operatic grandeur of The Phantom of the Opera and the spellbinding world of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child live alongside the intimate storytelling of Maybe Happy Ending and the bold, contemporary energy of Hell’s Kitchen, you feel the full spectrum of what Broadway is right now. This season was curated to be deeply cohesive, pairing largescale Broadway blockbusters with newly acclaimed work, so that audiences can move between spectacular, outrageous, nostalgic, and deeply personal experiences—all within one series.”

“Our Broadway series is designed to offer something for everyone, from familyfriendly new stories like BOOP!® The Musical to productions that lean into more mature themes, including Alicia Keys’ Hell’s Kitchen,” said Crystal Brewe, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Ensemble Arts Philly. “Equally important is how people experience these shows in our spaces: we make attending Broadway convenient with flexible packaging options, new food and beverage offerings like Leo and Curtain Call, and convenient orderahead concessions that make it easier than ever to turn a performance into a full night out in Center City—while ensuring every guest can fully participate through American Sign Language and audio description performances and captioning across the season.”

THE WHO’S TOMMY
April 13–18, 2027 • The Shubert Organization’s Forrest Theatre

Myth and spectacle combine in this fresh reinvention that includes the unforgettable anthems “I’m Free,” “See Me, Feel Me,” “Sensation,” and “Pinball Wizard.” After witnessing his father shoot his rival, the young Tommy Walker is lost in the universe, endlessly and obsessively staring into the mirror. An innate knack for pinball catapults him from reticent adolescent to celebrity savior. Tony Award-winning composer Pete Townshend and Tony Award-winning original director Des McAnuff find powerful resonance reexamining this classic story for today.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
June 9–27, 2027 • Academy of Music

The Phantom is back to thrill audiences once again! Cameron Mackintosh presents a revitalized new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary musical, The Phantom of the Opera, which was rapturously received by London critics when it reopened in 2021.

This new North American Tour features Maria Björnson’s brilliant original design and is based on the celebrated direction of Harold Prince, with musical staging and choreography by Gillian Lynne.

The Phantom of the Opera is widely considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular productions in history, playing to over 160 million people in 47 territories and 195 cities in 21 languages. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s romantic, haunting, and soaring score includes “The Music of the Night,” “All I Ask of You,” “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again,” “Masquerade,” and the iconic title song. It tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerized by the talents and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, The Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, The Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness, and passions collide.
