PRESENTS AN EVENING WITH BEST-SELLING COMEDIC ESSAYIST,
DAVID SEDARIS,
APRIL 5, 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (March 6, 2025) – Ensemble Arts Philly, in association with Innovation Arts & Entertainment, presents American humorist and essayist, David Sedaris – best known for his sardonic autobiographical stories and commentary – in An Evening with David Sedaris at the Miller Theater on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 8:00 p.m.
Join the best-selling author and NPR contributor for an evening featuring all-new stories, an audience Q&A, and a book signing. With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.
Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation toward middle age and mortality. His power of observation has never been sharper, and his ability to shock readers into laughter is unparalleled. Much of comedy here is born out of the vertiginous moment when your own body betrays you and you realize that the story of your life is made up of more past than future. Sedaris’s cheerfully misanthropic stories allow his autobiographical narrative to reveal a uniquely personal narrative that will keep audiences laughing throughout the evening.
“David Sedaris has long been conjuring up laughter with keen observations about the seemingly mundane and very personal, sharing tales of misdeeds growing up with his siblings in North Carolina, his parents, his life in France, and everything in between,” said Frances Egler, Vice President of Theatrical Programming and Presentations. “His methodical, droll delivery is just as captivating as his written prose, inviting listeners into a world of systematic storytelling.”
Sedaris is the bestselling author of the books Calypso, Theft by Finding, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Holidays on Ice, Naked, and Barrel Fever. Sedaris published his first collection of essays and short stories entitled Barrel Fever in 1994; followed by his book Naked in 1997, which became his first series of New York Times Bestsellers; and his 2000 collection Me Talk Pretty One Day, which won the Thurber Prize for American Humor.
Sedaris was first discovered in a Chicago club by radio host Ira Glass, when he was reading a diary he kept since 1977, and Glass asked him to appear on his weekly local program, The Wild Room. Sedaris’ success on The Wild Room led to his NPR debut in 1992 when he read a radio essay on Morning Edition titled Santaland Diaries, describing his purported experiences as an elf at Macy’s department store during Christmas in New York. Santaland Diaries was a success with listeners and Sedaris began recording a monthly segment for NPR, which was based on his diary entries and was edited and produced by Ira Glass.
Sedaris has been nominated for three GRAMMY Awards® for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. He and his sister, Amy Sedaris, have collaborated under the name “The Talent Family” and have written half a dozen plays which have been produced by La Mama, Lincoln Center, and the Drama Department in New York City. These plays include Stump the Host; Stiches; One Woman Show, which received an Obie Award; Incident at Cobbler’s Knob; and The Book of Liz, which was published in book form by Dramatists Play Service.
Other featured upcoming performances include David Nihill: Shelf Help Tour (March 6, 2025, Perelman Theater); Sheng Wang (March 7, 2025, Miller Theater); Sh!t-faced Shakespeare®: Much Ado About Nothing (March 8, 2025, Perelman Theater); Tango After Dark (March 12, 2025, Miller Theater); The RESET – An Immersive Sound Experience with Davin Youngs (March 29, 2025, Miller Theater); Je'Caryous Johnson Presents Jason's Lyric Live!
