FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (September 13, 2023) – The Kimmel Cultural Campus, in association with Larry Magid Entertainment (LME), presents two of the funniest, most influential and acclaimed talents of the past century, Steve Martin & Martin Short, at the Academy of Music on Friday, October 27, 2023, at 8:00 p.m. They will be joined by special guests Jeff Babko and The Steep Canyon Rangers.
You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today! is a show that redefines the form in unexpected and profound ways. Their humor is often subversive, but it is always a joyous self-deprecating romp from two comedy masters driven to make each other laugh as much as the audience.
"We are delighted to welcome comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short back to the Academy of Music this fall,” said Matías Tarnopolsky, president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center, Inc. “Their previous appearance on the Academy stage was memorable and hilarious, and we greatly look forward to enjoying their unrivaled talent and magnetic charm at the Academy once again.”
The jokes come at you at a rapid-fire pace with little setup and big punch lines as they mock Hollywood and the fickle nature of celebrity, but the comedy truly soars when they lovingly (and relentlessly) roast each other. Martin and Short’s chemistry and timing on stage reflects a friendship forged over three decades, beginning when they met for the first time on the set of the 1986 film, Three Amigos. These two titans of comedy have been touring together since 2015, when they launched their first live show entitled A Very Stupid Conversation.
In 2018, they released their Netflix special An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life, for which they received three Primetime Emmy® Award nominations. In 2021, Steve Martin co-created and starred in his first television show Only Murders in the Building alongside Short and Selena Gomez. Both Martin and Short earned Primetime Emmy® Award nominations, Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, and Golden Globe® Award nominations for their roles, and Short also received a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination.
Steve Martin has won five Grammy® Awards, a Primetime Emmy® Award, and an Honorary Academy Award®. He was also nominated for two Tony® Awards for his musical Bright Star in 2016. He has received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the Kennedy Center Honor, and an AFI Life Achievement Award. In 2004, Comedy Central ranked Martin at sixth place in a list of the 100 Greatest Stand-up Comics. Martin has appeared on twenty-seven Saturday Night Live shows and guest-hosted fifteen times.
Martin Short has received various awards, including two Primetime Emmy® Awards and a Tony Award®. Short joined the improvisation group The Second City in Toronto, Ontario, in 1977. He came to public notice when the group produced a show for television, Second City Television (SCTV). Short appeared on SCTV in 1982-83 and developed several characters before moving on to Saturday Night Live for the 1984-85 season. Short starred in Broadway productions, including Neil Simon’s musicals The Goodbye Girl and Little Me. Little Me earned him a Tony Award® for Best Actor in a Musical. In 2019, Martin Short became an Officer of the Order of Canada and has received medals from the late Queen Elizabeth II, including in the 2002 Golden Jubilee and in the 2012 Diamond Jubilee.
