Golden Girls - The Laughs Continue
September 13, 2023KIMMEL CULTURAL CAMPUS PRESENTS GOLDEN GIRLS – THE LAUGHS CONTINUE, THE BRAND-NEW LAUGH-OUT-LOUD PARODY BASED ON THE CLASSIC TV SERIES, OCTOBER 27 – 28, 2023
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (September 13, 2023) –– Grab your best friends and head to Shady Pines! The Golden Girls are back and better than ever in a brand-new stage show that’s more exciting than a trip to St. Olaf. The Kimmel Cultural Campus, in association with Murray & Peter Present, presents an all-new Golden Girls parody adventure, Golden Girls – The Laughs Continue at the Miller Theater for THREE performances on October 27, 2023, at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., and Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 7:30 p.m.
Miami’s sassiest seniors have returned for one more hurrah. It’s 2023, and we find Sophia out on bail, after being busted by the DEA for running a drug ring for retirees. Blanche and Rose have founded CreakN, a thriving sex app for seniors. And Dorothy is trying to hold it all together, with help from a new (much) younger sex-crazed lover. Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue allows audiences to relive the heartfelt hilarity of the four ladies who never stopped being best friends.
“From laughter that never fades to wisdom that only deepens with age, The Golden Girls remains a cultural phenomenon,” said Frances Egler, Vice President of Theatrical Programming & Presentations on the Kimmel Cultural Campus. “More than just a tribute to the iconic television show, The Laughs Continue promises an unforgettable night filled with love, laughter, and a reminder that we're never too old to make memories that will last a lifetime."
Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue is a professional stage show unlike any other Golden Girls tribute that you might have experienced. The show features character-driven antics from the acclaimed series while adding sex-positive plot points and updated references. While the beloved characters are the same, the fresh storyline follows brand new antics of the girls tackling modern-day problems.
The play is written by Robert Leleux, author of The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy and The Living End. His work has also appeared in The New York Times and The New York Times Magazine, and his other plays have been produced across the country. Direction by Eric Swanson, who was the co-founder and Executive Director of The Detroit Actors’ Theatre Company. The cast includes Ryan Bernier as Dorothy, Vince Kelley as Blanche, Adam Graber as Rose, Christopher Kamm as Sophia, and Jason Bowen as Stanley/Troy. The production is produced by Murray & Peter Present.
The Golden Girls originally aired on NBC from September 1985 to May 1992, with a total of 180 half-hour episodes, spanning seven seasons. The ensemble cast included Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty. The television show tackled a wide range of societal issues in its seven seasons and is widely considered one of the top sitcoms of all time, heralded as boundary-breaking for highlighting issues including the HIV/AIDS epidemic, immigration, homosexuality, age discrimination, antisemitism, interracial marriage, and more.
The Golden Girls won several awards including the Primetime Emmy® Award for Outstanding Comedy Series twice. Each of the four stars received an Emmy® Award, making it one of only four sitcoms in the award’s history to achieve this. In 2014, the Writers Guild of America placed the sitcom at number 69 in their list of the “101 Best Written TV Series of All Time.”
