ENSEMBLE ARTS PHILLY WELCOMES
THE ICONIC PHILADELPHIA MAGIC DUO
PENN & TELLER
IN THEIR 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR,
MAY 15, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (April 24, 2025) – Ensemble Arts Philly presents the iconic Philadelphia magic sensations Penn & Teller in their 50th Anniversary tour at the Academy of Music on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. From humble beginnings busking on the streets of Philadelphia to acclaimed sold-out runs on Broadway, to the longest-running and one of the most beloved resident headline acts in Las Vegas history, magic’s legendary duo – Penn Jillette and Teller – continue to defy labels, and at times physics and good taste, by redefining the genre of magic and inventing their very own distinct niche in comedy.

“The arts are transformative, introducing us to new worlds through music, theatricality, and a bit of magic,” said Frances Egler, Vice President of Programming and Presentations. “For more than 50 years, Philadelphia’s own Penn & Teller have blended humor with illusion to transport, entertain, and awe audiences across the globe, and a return to where it all began is fitting.”

Not exactly comedians but more than just magicians, Penn & Teller bring a quirky combination of laughs and illusions to every performance. You’re ready to laugh before they even trot out their tricks, with the big, brash Penn Jillette towering over his staid, unspeaking partner Teller. And once they dip into the bag of tricks they’ve been perfecting since the 1970s, you’re simultaneously dazzled and delighted. Whether they’re working with things like magic bullets, nail guns, and straitjackets, or just employing a seemingly ordinary deck of cards to demonstrate some sleight of hand, the duo can make you doubt your own senses as they appear to make the impossible happen right before your eyes. Sometimes they toss a touch of danger into the mix, and sometimes they simply play the whole thing for laughs, but whatever illusion they’re unveiling, Penn & Teller can always pull it off.

Other featured upcoming performances include PHILADANCO! Relentless Resident Visions (April 25 – 27, 2025, Perelman Theater); Mo Amer: El Oso Palestino Tour (May 4, 2025, Miller Theater); The Martha Graham Cracker Cabaret 20th Anniversary Extravaganza (May 16, 2025, Miller Theater); Ichiko Aoba: Luminescent Creature Tour (May 17, 2025, Miller Theater); Sarah Millican: Late Bloomer (June 17, 2025, Miller Theater); and Jimmy Carr: Laughs Funny (June 23, 2025, Miller Theater).

... they have become icons of stage magic and a particular brand of comedy, working as self-professed bad boys working in gleeful contrast to the glitzy showmanship and megabucks spectacles of contemporaries...

The Guardian

... this dynamic duo strikes the perfect balance of traditional magic, unconventional trickery and quirky humour.
