PHILADANCO! Our Voices, Our Choices...This Is US!
Winter ResidencyPhiladelphia's favorite dance company, PHILADANCO!, returns with a presentation highlighting women's perspectives and expressions and featuring voices of African American women.
Celebrating its 55th season, PHILADANCO's winter program highlights four groundbreaking African American women choreographers, some who have been invited to revisit their previous works - exploring original movement, music, and stories through exciting and thought-provoking choreography that will speak to audiences of all ages.
- Martha Nichols makes her PHILADANCO! debut with a world premiere piece.
- Jawole Willa Jo Zollar looks back at her iconic ballet, By Way of the Funk, acknowledging without question that this music of the 50s is here to stay.
- Dawn Marie Bazemore revisits her first ballet with PHILADANCO! , A Movement for Five, inspired by the events surrounding Central Park 5, the work aimed to uncover the structure of a community and socio-political system that failed to protect the lives of five innocent young boys living in Harlem in 1989.
- Bebe Miller re-energizes her work, My Science, with a cast of new and original dancers celebrating the music of American rock band Led Zeppelin.
These featured women have a long-standing history with PHILADANCO!, their voices will feel familiar and for those who are just coming to the conversation their choices are welcomed.
Across the nation and around the world, PHILADANCO! is celebrated for its innovation, creativity, and preservation of primarily African American traditions in dance. As one of Philadelphia's premier dance companies it remains important that PHILADANCO! continues to provide an available space and canvas where women of color are seen, heard, and supported through the art of dance.
